Vintage Watches: From Early Era to Modern Time

Powering a watch and reading the time has evolved over the years.

Starting off with the first wrist watches in the 19th Century that were manual wind with an analogue dial, wrist watches have now evolved from this traditional deign to using modern technology such as quartz movements and even to solar power.

Wrist watches generally came into vogue and popularity at the start of the 1900′s and more so after World War One.

World War One did not pass however without a great influence on wrist watches during this time. Although many people in the military did still use highly accurate and reliable pocket watches that were usually housed in a stronger case than before, there was now a demand for a watch that could easily be read and worn on the wrist.

This produced what is often called “trench watches”. These will often have movements that are quite literally carbon copies of pocket watch movements only smaller, and were sometimes put into cases with a hinged top offering better protection.

It was also during the war, that watch companies attempted to make a “waterproof” watch case. This was met with varied success, and did include such designs as the monocoque (one piece) watch case, and the “Borgel” case with the screw in movement.
 During this time they were a manual wind movement that usually had a power reserve of between 18 to 38 hours.

This time was leading into the Art Deco era of the 1920′s, which influenced greatly the style of the wrist watch.

Going away from the more usual round dial with Roman numerals, Arabic numbers (1 through to 12) came strongly into fashion.

Watch companies such as Cartier produced some exciting watch dials where the Roman numerals or Arabic numbers radiated in size.

This was not only for round watch cases but also square, rectangular and tonneau cases.
The metals used for the watch cases also went from stainless steel, silver or gold to platinum. Furthermore, precious gemstones such as sapphire, rubies and diamonds were now set into the watch cases, making them not only wonderful timepieces but a piece of jewellery as well.

Many people wrongly assume that analogue watches came out around the 1980′s with quartz watches, however these style of dials were actually produced in the century before and can be found in some pocket watches.

It is also during the Art Deco period, that analogue dials on watches become popular once again, and has stayed with the watch industry ever since.
 Various watchmakers had played with a self winding (automatic) movement, with Rolex being one of the more notable companies in producing their perpetual movement.

This type of movement continues to self wind as the watch is worn via a rotor that continues to wind the mainspring.

Later, watch companies started experimenting with the “new” quartz technology, and during the 1960′s and 70′s, watches with quartz (battery) powered movement came onto the market.

This type of movement was mostly rejected by most of the Swiss watch companies who had long made their name as the leaders in watch manufacturing, as they did not consider the quartz movement to be a “true” watch movement.

However, overseas markets jumped onto this technology, especially the Japanese who started to mass produce highly accurate and inexpensive quartz powered watches.

So many of these were sold, that by 1978 quartz powered watches had actually overtaken sales of Mechanical Watches, causing what is referred to as the “Quartz” revolution.

With the Swiss watch industry nearly decimated by this, this was countered in 1981 by the Swatch Watch coming onto the market to start to reclaim many years and countless dollars of lost sales.

One interesting and quite collectable battery powered watch, is the (original) Bulova Accutron watches which were extremely accurate and very expensive to produce – compared to the cheaper Japanese quartz movements. These came onto the market in the early 1960′s, and are actually referred to as an “electronic” watch as opposed to a “quartz” watch, as they use a traditional balance wheel or tuning fork which a conventional quartz watch does not.
